East Tennessee’s waterways offer regional economic development opportunities, tourism landmarks, and opportunities to enjoy the natural scenery that shapes our region.

Nolichucky Outdoor Recreation Association (NORA) members, volunteers, and outfitters were among the first to respond in the wake of Hurricane Helene. With their keen understanding of local waterways, NORA’s team has supported search and rescue efforts, supply lines, and forged a plan to partner with MountainTrue and the East Tennessee Foundation (ETF) to support ongoing river stewardship.

ETF has granted $200,000 to NORA to fund its economic development and environmental cleanup program. To date, the association has removed approximately 90,000 pounds of debris from the Nolichucky River, employed more than 20 people in cleanup work, and enlisted more than 30 volunteers.

“With the Nolichucky River at the heart of our region’s identity, this work is restoring a cherished resource for public safety, ecological health, recreation, and the livelihoods of local outfitters and guides,” said Trey Moore, NORA Executive Director. “The East Tennessee Foundation’s partnership and support in addressing the widespread destruction left along our waterways has been a lifeline, not only for the river’s ecological recovery, but also for our community’s economic and emotional well-being.”
