The Pat Summitt Foundation (PSF), a fund of the East Tennessee Foundation, is excited to announce the dates for its fourth annual “Walgreens Backs Pat” fundraiser. The campaign will run from August 5 through August 19 at 180 Walgreens stores in Middle and East Tennessee. The campaign will expand this year to include the Chattanooga area as well as Nashville and East Tennessee.
Customers who visit participating locations will be encouraged to donate to PSF during the checkout process. All money raised will go to PSF to support its mission of advancing research, providing support for patients and caregivers, and promoting education and awareness.
“We are looking forward to kicking off our annual Walgreens fundraising campaign. The growing number of participating stores shows Walgreens’ commitment to supporting Coach Summitt’s mission to aid in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease in communities across Tennessee,” says Morgan Vance, Director of Strategic Initiatives and Advancement for the Pat Summitt Foundation.
The annual campaign has raised almost $200,000 in the past three years to support the mission of the Pat Summitt Foundation. Earlier this year, PSF awarded almost $175,000 in grant funding in Middle and East Tennessee, which would not have been possible without the support of Walgreens. These grants provide funds for much needed programs and resources that positively impact those battling Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Coach Pat Summitt was the head coach of the Lady Vol basketball team for 38 years, leading the program to eight NCAA championships, 32 SEC Championships, and was the first coach in the NCAA to reach 1,000 career wins. She retired in the spring of 2012 after revealing her diagnosis of early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type in the fall of 2011. At that time, she made it her mission to aid in the fight against Alzheimer’s and dementia, with the establishment of the Pat Summitt Foundation. To date, PSF has awarded over $4 million to advance research, provide care and support for patients and caregivers, and raise awareness about the disease.
