In 1894, Mount Rest Home was started by a group of forward-thinking women, at their own expense, as a residence for elderly ladies in Knoxville who had very little funds or family to care for them. The devoted women of the board of Mount Rest Home cooked and sold lunches at Thanksgiving to raise funds to support the home, and they tended to every need of the house and the ladies who lived there. Although the lovely home eventually closed, many of the daughters and granddaughters of the original board members continued to provide for the welfare of women and children in Knox County.
They established the Mount Rest Foundation in 1994 and then the Mount Rest Fund of East Tennessee Foundation in 2004 to continue and secure their families’ legacy of caring for Knox County’s women, children, and youth. Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC (CNS), the contractor at Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, TN, and the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, TX, established funds at East Tennessee Foundation and Amarillo Area Foundation as part of their commitment to the host communities of Amarillo and Oak Ridge, as well as their local counties and regions.
With the leadership of an employee-based CNS Y-12 Investment Advisory Committee, CNS employees have the opportunity to recommend grant support where the need is the greatest and the resources are best allocated. Since 2015, this fund has awarded 180 grants benefiting 120 nonprofits in their 20-county service area in East Tennessee.

The Butterfly Fund was established at East Tennessee Foundation in August 2008 by the Barger and Harrill families in memory of their daughters, Emily Barger and Maddie Harrill. Both of these beautiful little girls were diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of childhood cancer, in 2007. Sadly, both girls passed away just weeks apart during the summer of 2008. The fund serves to raise awareness of and funds for childhood cancers.
Established in 2006, this fund benefits the interest area of youth education (with a primary focus on Boy Scouts and Junior Achievement).
