Monroe County High School students are eligible to apply
Monroe County---Graduates of any Monroe County High School are eligible to apply for the 2009 John D. Grubb & Louise G. Sumner Fund for Monroe County Scholarship of East Tennessee Foundation (ETF). The scholarship allows recipients to attend any Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accredited public or private nonprofit college or university in the state of Tennessee. Applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Scholarships are awarded in the amount of $2,000 per year and are renewable for up to four years, for a total of $8,000. To remain eligible, students must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA and earn a minimum of 12 credits each semester in which they are enrolled.
ETF administers scholarships throughout a 25-county service area in East Tennessee. Requirements for the various scholarships range from financial need to scholastic achievement. Several scholarships are targeted toward specific schools or counties, students involved in certain extracurricular activities, or those who may not display the highest scholastic rankings, yet still possess great potential and motivation. Others are geared toward students pursuing a specific field, such as business or nursing.
In fall 2008, over $146,000 was disbursed and over $859,000 was committed in scholarship monies to 91 students. Scholarships provided through ETF help fulfill the dreams of those students wishing to obtain a secondary education, whether they are graduating high school seniors or returning adult students.
Scholarships administered by ETF allow individuals and groups to honor loved ones while helping change the lives of those pursuing higher education. Many of the scholarships have been established to honor the memory of a lost parent, spouse or child. Some have been founded to honor teachers, coaches or prominent community leaders.
